What is the Tenchi 101 Facts and who wrote it?
Yousuke Kuroda wrote it under the direction of Masaki Kajishima and it was publised by Cinema Ten-Day Report Corporation.  At a length of 230 pages, it sold for about 1,000 Yen.  Kuroda is a scriptwriter of the TM! OAVs and mainscriptwriter beginning episode 7.  Kajishima is the concept co-creator and the character designer, and the guy running the OAVs.  Kuroda was upgraded to the mainscriptwriter as of episode 7.
It answered FAQs about the show right before OAV2 came out.

101 Tenchi Muyo facts BY Yousuke Kuroda

GENERAL
1. Why is the title "Tenchimuyo! Ryo-oh-ki"?
Answer:
AIC's president Toru Miura chose it.

More details ...
In the early plan, there was a simple and tentative title "Ryo-oh-ki", by Masaki Kajishima. But when it was animated, the sponsor (Pioneer?) wanted a title with much stronger impact.  Toru Miura and Masaki Kajishima saw "Thomas the Tank Engine" (Old British Model Animation about a family of steam engines. ^_^) on TV and decided to include the hero's name in the title.  Toru Miura expected the series to be a comedy with characters jumping around, upside down, and came up with an idea of "Tenchi Muyo! Ryooki" (tenchi means "sky and ground" muyou is "no need"). But a problem is the correct meaning of "tenchi muyou" is also "don't make this upside down" and nobody there knew this (^_^). (This is one of common mistakes many young people make.)
2. Where did the character names come from?
Answer:
Many are from places in Okayama-ken (Okayama Prefecture.)

More details ...
What, all of them? Most of them are based on places in Okayama, where Masaki Kajishima was born. Others are from words and the staff!

Masaki Tenchi.
Different Kanji. Masaki from Kajishima's first name. Tenchi means Universe, which in this case, implies the scale of the Tenchi-world.

Ryoko.
Based on Kajishima's favourite seiyuu's name. Again with different kanji.

Ryo-oh-ki.
A variation on Ryoko.

Aeka.
From an old Japanese word, "Aekanaru" (Means "delicate", "weak", "frail" and so on.) Kajishima likes the sound of this word.

Masaki Nobuyuki.
AIC staff ^_^

Masaki Katsuhito.
AIC staff ^_^

Jurai.
Means "thickly covered with trees".

Souja.
City in Okayama-ken. Different kanji.

Mihoshi.
City in Okayama-ken with the same kanji, but read as "Bisei" Something about it being famous for ice-cream?

Yosho.
Mountain in Konko-cho.(??).

Kamidake.
Very nearby Yosho. Different kanji. There is a onsen here.

Azaka.
Azaka Tunnel, between Konko-cho and a neighbouring town, with different kanji of course.

Kiyone Makibi.
Kiyone is a village in Okayama, Makibi is a neighbouring town.

Washu.
Mountain in Kurashiki-shi. Amusement park here.

Sasami.
Sami Kaigan (Beach of Sami). ("Sami no sunahama" (sand-beach of Sami) The  first kanji "sa" is for "suna".)

Kagato.
Town in Okayama.

3. Is there a shrine?
Answer:
It exists. In Okayama.

More details ...
Most famous one is "oni no iwaya" (demon's stone house) in Souja-Shi, where legend tells a fiend lived (unconfined). The small shrine where Ryoko was confined is based on this place. Masaki Shrine is based on a shrine near the house of Kajishima's grandfather. Its name is used as a character in the second series. There is a Masaki Shrine in Okayama, but this is not related.

4. Alien and Earther, how do they communicate?
Answer:
They communicate by thought.

More details ...
Well, it is a fantasy. Don't ask.

Ryoko has had 700 years to learn the language. (Kuroda is guessing.)  There is a kind of 'language field' around Aeka and others in which people can communicate directly by thought. As long as they are close to each other, they all think they are speaking the same language. Mihoshi too.

5. About the Masaki house ...

Answer:
It has 3 floors.

More details ...
The design is based on one seen in a foreign country with a mezzanine floor.

1. Ground level
Storeroom.
Toilet and Bath.
Kitchen.
Library.
Lounge.
Genkan. (Entrance)

2. Mezzanine.
Connecting stairs, 2 up, 2 down. View over Lounge.

3. Second Floor.
Mihoshi. (Tenchi's Father's room.)
Aeka & Sasami. "Onesama you snore loudly!"
Tenchi. "Oh for some privacy!!"

6. The characters and mecha are very Japanese ...
Answer:
Because I like the style.

More details ...
Kajishima designed the characters and their cloths in Japanese way because he likes it. As for mecha: Blame, er ... Atsushi Takeuchi.  Although Jurai is very Japanese, GP is Western. Ryo-oh-ki, Washu and Kagato are inorganic.

7. Are Jurai Mecha really made of wood?

Answer:
Really, wood can do it!

More details ...
There are super-giant-trees in the Jurai System. Giant robots controlled by skillful masters _carve_ the outer units out of them. Of course, the wooden units are not too strong, so they are covered with a special shield material.

8. What form of power do Jurai ships use?

Answer:
The energy comes from sub-space.

More details ...
There is no mechanical power system on Jurai's ships. All the energy comes from "Ouke no ki" (Tree of Imperial Family) which extends its roots into various sub-spaces.

9. What's the secret of the Jurai star?

Answer:
It was a pirate guild nation.

More details ...
The followings are from Kajishima's "Explanatory Notes of Basic Concepts":

Jurai Star:
An Imperial nation with the largest territory among the nations in Galaxy Union. However, being at the edge of the galaxy, the number of actual stars it owns are relatively small.

Birth of Jurai:
Long before the creation of Galaxy Union, there were lots of nobles who became pirates after being usurped from power. They merged into a pirate guild, whose first leader was an ancestor of Jurai Family.

Characteristics of Jurai:
72% of the surface of the capital planet is land mass, and most of it is covered by plants, consisting of hundreds of millions of species. One of them is the "ouke no ki", which has its own will and power.

Activity of Jurai:
The pirate guild still exists and is controlled by Jurai. It is a combination of Imperial Guard and Intelligence Service. They are involved in some illegal activities but that is not their main concern.

Size of the pirate guild:
It is the third largest group of the pirate groups in Galaxy and 15% of the pirate fleets in Galaxy are under its control.

10. What's the connection between Earth and Jurai?

Answer:
There are lots. The Earth is a subject nation.

More details ...
You can guess the relationship from various lines in the anime:
"Colonial Planet No.0315. The Earth" (ep.2, Kamidake)
"This is within a Special Protection Area" (ep.5, Mihoshi)
"The Earth is under direct control of Jurai. So without its permission..." (ep.7, GP officer)

The Earth is under Jurai's direct control and this is approved by the GP.  The top politicians of Earth secretly maintain contact with Jurai. But Jurai does not interfere, it is just watching.

11. Why have the Jurai women got such long hair? (ponytails?)

Answer:
Habit, it's customary.

More details ...
When they are young, the girls have their hair tied up in two bunchies on the top of their heads, like Sasami and Aeka in childhood (ep.3). When they grow up, the hair is partly cut to look like Aeka now, twin tails. But of course, each has slightly different style.

12. About the secrets of ouke no ki (Tree of Imperial Family)?

Answer:
Its origin is Tsunami. (Oh they love these cryptic answers.)

More details ...
Again from Kajishima's "Explanatory Note of Basic Concepts":

What is ouke no ki?
It is a tree with will and power of high level. Its origin is called Tsunami, who has ten kou-ou-yoku.

Its partner:
The Trees select their partner (ie the best friend) through a ceremony.

Power of The Trees:
Partners can get energy supply from their Tree. (Tenchi's grandfather used kou-ou-yoku in ep.5. He could do so only with help of his Tree, Funaho. But Tenchi can make one by himself) They also functions as telecommunication equipment and memory.

Varying power of The Trees along generations:
The Trees are classified in four groups. The origin (Tsunami, 0th generation), 1st generation, 2nd generation and the others. The first (e.g. Funaho) and second (e.g. Ryuuou) generations can creat three kou-ou-yoku but later generations can make them visible only when more than one Tree combine their power.

How to grow The Trees:
Only by sewing a seed. Other methods like grafting will eliminate its power.

Three kinds of seeds:
The Trees bear fruits like a peach, which is a perfect food. But Their stone grows only into a grass (it is a very good medicine, though). The fruit has to be completely ripe to become the second type of seeds, which will become another Tree, but only on the Jurai Star.

The special seed:
Occasionally Trees produce a seed in sap on the trunk. This happens only when Tree regenerates itself. When the Tree dies, this seed germinates by interaction with the 'key'. This special seeds can grow anywhere as long as its kept in the special unit. (the seed Tenchi handed to Aeka in ep.7 is this one)

13. What's the master key?

Answer:
It is carved from the Ouke no Ki (Tree of Imperial Family).

More details ...
The sap of the trees often crystallizes into a jewel on its branch. If a good one if found, it is cut out together with the branch and carved into a key. The partner of the Tree keeps it and nobody else can use it unless the partner wishes so.  However, when the life of the Tree and/or its partner is in danger, the master key will override and take command. A master key is the key for the 1st generation Trees. Therefore, Youshou's key (Tenchi Sword) is a master key while Aeka's is just a normal key. This is why Tenchi, with his master key, could release Ryoko from Aeka's jail in ep.2.

14. About the secret of Ko-oh-yoku (Wings of hawk of light?).
Answer:
It is a manifestation of God's aura.

More details ...
Ko-oh-yoku is a manifestation of God's aura and not a weapon. Although apart from Tsunami, one Tree can produce only three Ko-oh-yoku, they are enough to protect the entire ship. Ko-oh-yoku does not shut the incoming energy out but converts it to harmless one (one power exists that could pierce them but it requires huge amount of energy and a very big system).

Incidentally, to increase the number of Ko-oh-yoku by one, twice as much energy is needed. (ie, Tsunami uses 2^10/2^3 = 2^7 = 128 times as much as energy.)
15. What's the connection between the Tree and the Water of Life?
Answer:
The water from the Tree of Imperial Family prolongs life.

More details ...
In ep.5 Aeka said to Yousho, "You will die, without Tree and Water of Life..."  Tree of Life is the Tree of Imperial Family, and Water of Life is the water flowing in the bridge of Ryu-oh. Once a Tree takes root to the ground, it cannot function at full power. The water has a healing power, and what Aeka meant was that without it Yousho could die from an accidental injury. Being a half Jurai and half Earthian, Yousho did not know himself how long he could live. Aeka also knew this but did not want to think he would change.

16. What is Ouke no Namida (Tear of Imperial Family)?
Answer:
That is the name of a Jurai flower.

More details ...
"Oh, this is a Ouke no Namida. You don't use this for celebration.." (ep.3, Yousho) On Jurai, when a member of the Imperial Family dies, he/she will be buried with his/her ship. The ship's Tree becomes the cenotaph and Ouke no Namida are planted around it.

17. What kind of place is the Galaxy Academy?

Answer:
A very dubious (mysterious?) place.

More details ...
Has to be if Washu is a typical graduate. (^_^)  Originally this institute was called "Imperial Science Academy". Yes, it was a research institute founded by Jurai Imperial Family. It later became independent and changed its name to "Galaxy Academy". As Jurai was a pirate guild, they had no reluctance to invite talented people from outside. Helped with a grant system, many excellent scientists came to join. Behind the scenes the Academy still remains closely associated with Jurai and contributes to its personal network in the other planets.

Facilities of Academy:
It consists of an entire solar system. The classrooms are spaceships and they use one planet for PE and another for cooking (^_^).

Students of Academy:
It is basically a boarding school. There are various people, young and old, and they have to pass hard exams every year to go to the next grade. So by the time they reach the graduate school, they are respected as a good student but also regarded as a weirdo, too (^_^;).

Achievement of Academy:
New technologies invented within Academy are released to other planets to partly finance the organisation. However, offensive weapons are not publicised unless a defensive weapon to nullify it is invented. Also some inventions are kept secret to be supplied to GP and armed forces of Jurai and Galactic Union.

18. The Galaxy Police secret.
Answer:
In reality, they are a delivery service?

More details ...
It is just like Interpol, with authority to arrest. Therefore, it is a police covering entire space within Galactic Union. Of course, each planet has its own police but GP is for large-scale crimes like space pirates. (Just like WWWA ^_^) However, there are places where even GP cannot enter. Earth, the interdicted area under Jurai's direct control, is an example.

Personnel organisation of GP:
The members of GP, whose number reaches trillions (including cleaners ^_^), are scouted from planetary police and so on. (Like WWWA.) Sometimes they serve for both at the same time.

Finance of GP:
To avoid interference by the political power, GP is financed through Galactic Union. However, as this is not enough, it raises money from activities like courier service (^_^), using its privilege to be able to go anywhere.

Rank of detectives:
The detectives are classified as 1st and 2nd class detectives and so on. A 1st class detective investigate independently in their jurisdiction. Mihoshi is publically assigned to Special Area, but in truth, it was relegation. Her grandfather wants her back to HQ as soon as possible.

Equipment for detectives:
To cover their large jurisdiction, their space ship is like a moving police station and a shuttle is for patrol. Most of their equipment is latest invention of Galaxy Academy, which in return can gets some feed-back on them.

Mihoshi: "GP takkyubin desu!"

19. Why's that onsen floating in the air?

Answer:
Ryoko.

More details ...
In ep.5, a floating onsen suddenly appeared, with its entrances signed "Ladies" and "Tenchi" (^_^). It was made by Ryoko who became so fond of onsens after ep.4.  More than 5000 years ago, before Washu was confined by Kagato, she made a system with which anything can be created out of elements in the air as long as a plan for it exists. She made it for herself but Ryoko used it for a different purpose.

TENCHI MASAKI

20. Why did Tenchi break the demon's seal in the shrine?
Answer:
His grandfather's fault.

More details ...
He broke the seal out of pure curiosity. "If someone told you never ever do something, you'd want to do it, wouldn't you?" (ep.1, Tench) In fact he fell in his grandfather's trap, he made Tenchi interested in the demon ever since childhood, with help of Tenchi's mother. He is a tactician (^_^) and knew that Ryoko was watching Tenchi all the time. Even though Tenchi did not realise the astral body of Ryoko was watching him (flash back in ep.5), his grandfather knew. He arranged so that Tenchi would break the seal and use the Tree to attract Aeka. He felt something special about Tenchi and wanted him to be Emperor of Jurai in the future. That's why he gave his master key to Tenchi and told him to fight against Kagato.  But Tenchi won the battle without it in the end. Tenchi has more power than his grandfather first thought and he had to change his plans ...

21. Why is Tenchi's hair like that?
Answer:
It's a Jurai custom.

More details ...
Jurai's people bundle their hair into one (man) or two (woman). Of course, Tenchi does not know this himself but has got used to it because he has had it from childhood. Incidentally, long hair is not allowed in his school but the principal turns a blind eye because Tenchi's grandfather is a friend of his.

The Jurai custom is:
1 - tail if you are a boy. Tenchi, Nobuyuki, Katsuhito, Yosho.
2 - tails if you are a girl. Sasami, Aeka.

Washu, Kagato, Ryoko and Ryo-oh-ki don't count.

22. Is Tenchi still going to school?

Answer:
He voluntarily dropped out of school.

More details ...
Thanks to the battle between Tenchi and Ryoko, his school, Kurashiki Nishi Kogyo Koko (Kurashiki West High for Technology) was destroyed and there has been no definite plan to rebuild it.  Some of the student have moved to other schools and the others are using temporary huts as classrooms. How about Tenchi? He has quit voluntarily. He didn't have to because the cause of the accident never became clear, but he, being a responsible man after his mother, felt he should. Perhaps he thought that if he goes to school, Aeka and Ryoko would follow him to cause more trouble.

23. What is that book under Tenchi's bed?

Answer:
Typical shonen fare.

More details ...
If you watch very closely, you will find a couple of books under Tenchi's bed. They are books for sound boys (^_^) and basically a kind of manga.

24. What are those posters in Tenchi's room?

Answer:
They were given to him.

More details ...
^_^;; Beautiful Girls in Swimsuits. Tenchi is an idol otaku?  No. One of them was a calendar given to him by a local sake shop. Techi is such a nice boy he didn't want to waste what was given to him. The other one was from the Post Office. He is not interested in idols very much.

25. Why did Tenchi get on Ryu-oh in Ep.5?

Answer:
Because he was the only one who could break the seal.

More details ...
In ep.5, Tenchi attacked Souja from Ryu-oh. But why not Aeka? Because he's got a master key. Later, he used Ko-oh-yoku for attack, but attack with Ko-oh-yoku is so powerful that it is sealed and Aeka's normal key cannot break it.

26. When Kagato's ship destroyed the part of the Ryo-oh-ki that Tenchi was in, was he killed?

Answer:
No, he wasn't.

More details ...
In ep.5, Tenchi and others attacked Kagato's ship to rescue Ryoko, but the Souja overpowered them and destroyed Ryu-oh together with Tenchi. Was he killed at that time?  No. Although he lost the lower half of his body, the branches of Ryu-oh (the Tree in this case) kept him alive. You can see the branches in the cylindrical shield. Tsunami can revive the dead completely only when it is created by her in the first place. She could have revived dead Tenchi but that would not have been a perfect one: all Tenchi's power would have been lost. In short, he wasn't killed thanks to Ryu-oh and the guardians. Then Tsunami restored the lost physical bits.

In ep.6, Tenchi had something on his shoulder. That is a supporting system for this restoration and the reason why he was shining is because of the protective shield during the restoration.

27. What is the meaning of the mark on Tenchi's forehead?

Answer:
It becomes visible when he uses Ko-oh-yoku.

More details ...
"The sword is only to pull out your power. Please believe in your own power."  (ep.6, Tsunami). After saying so, Tsunami touched Tenchi's forehead with hers, then a mark appeared on his forehead. Tenchi's emblem illuminates because his and Tsunami's power resonated. She didn't have to do this for resonance but she made this symbolic gesture to encourage Tenchi. The emblem is called "Emblem of Power" and comes up when Tenchi uses his hidden power (for example, Ko-oh-yoku). The emblem is originally called "True Emblem" and members of Jurai's Imperial Family often draw it as make-up.

28. What is Tenchi's father's job?

Answer:
He is an architect.

More details ...
Masaki Nobuyuki: A cool guy of 40. A widower. Hobby; manga and peeping ...  He is a designer of ordinary houses. Tenchi's house is one of his works. He owns a small office with staff and, therefore, is a manager, too.  Originally, he used to work at home in his room (now, Mihoshi's) and only occasionally went to the office. After Ryoko moved his house to near Masaki shrine, he works in the office and lives alone in a nearby one-room flat not to disturb Tenchi's and his five cute girls (^_^).

29. Why do Tenchi's father and grandfather look so similar?

Answer:
Because they are related.

More details ...
Tenchi's father Nobuyuki and grandfather Katsuhito look very similar. Just after the release of the video series, there were many people who believed they were the same person. Katsuhito is a father of Tenchi's mother and Nobuyuki came to Masaki as a groom.  But, Yousho has been on Earth for 700 years since he sealed Ryoko in the shrine. It is not surprising that he had several wifes before and Nobuyuki is a descendant of one of his children by one of these wives. So the similarity is genetic.

Definitely not because Kajishima ran out of ideas nor because there were not enough seiyuu in "afureko" (^_^).

30. Where does Tenchi's father keep the video?

Answer:
In the library.

More details ...
"Well, as a father I must take the record of my son's sexual, I mean, his growth." (ep.2, Father), he said while he was recording it on the video.  Where has this tape gone? He keeps it in his library but he may have been disappointed with the outcome because, after all, nothing happened. (Nothing sexual anyway. (^_^) There is a shelf in his library for these tapes, with many strange titles.

31. Why did Tenchi's mother die?

Answer:
She died because she had a short lifespan?

More details ...
Well, people say "A beauty would not live long", wouldn't they? (Bijin hakumei is an idiom.) So, just be satisfied with this answer (^_^;).  It cannot be revealed because it is very important part of the plot.

32. Why don't people become suspicious about Tenchi's grandfather when he lives so long?

Answer:
Because he lives a long way from the village.

More details ...
Also he has got his way deep into Japanese politics in the last 700 years, so that he can change the family register.

33. Who is Tenchi's favourite?

Answer:
No particular favourite.

More details ...
Ryoko, Aeka, Sasami, Mihoshi and (ep. 8)Washu ... surrounded by the five cute girls, does Tenchi have any particular favourtite in mind?  No. He is satisfied with current family-like relationship and feels no need yet for any one particular girl.

RYOKO
34. What is the case of the Assault of Jurai?
Answer:
The theft of the Tsunami unit.

More details ...
The assault by Ryoko and Roy-oh-ki happened 700 years ago. Their objective was to steal the Tsunami unit, the origin of Trees of Imperial Family.  They failed in the end. After all, it was far too reckless of them to dive into the Jurai's main star. Actually, it was Kagato who wanted the Tsunami unit, and Ryoko was simply following his orders.  As told in ep.5, he thought that Tsunami possessed what he calls the Sacred Jewel of Universe, the biggest power in the universe. Incidentally at the time of the assault, Ryoko had all three jewels on her, which in turn proves the strength of Jurai's armed forces, who turned her away.

35. Why was Ryoko called "Devil of Destruction"?
Answer:
Because she destroyed everything.

More details ...
When she was a space pirate, she was called "Devil of Destruction". "My dear Aeka, I have to leave tomorrow and chase that Devil of Destruction.." (ep.2, Yosho). Why? Of course her enormous power was one reason, but the main reason was that she caused more damage by destruction than by robbery. For example, if she wanted a vase deep in a museum, she would just marched to it, paying no attention to (or not caring about) all other valuable things.  There may have been planets that were willing to give up what Ryoko wanted just to avoid the collateral damage. But Ryoko would not take any notice and just go for her target anyway. She sometimes restricted her power to make a robbery less easy and more enjoyable. Her fight with Tenchi in ep.1 was a mere child's play for her. She could have eliminated Tenchi along with the entire school if she wanted.

36. How could the dried Ryoko revive?
Answer:
By absorbing the energy from outside.

More details ...
You may think that it is not surprising she had become as dry as a mummy after 700 years of confinement. But it is not that simple. In her true form, she could survive the confinement for 700 or even 2000 years without drying up.  But she did not have a single jewel. Within the seal, she was deprived of the contact with outside and had to use her own energy to create a replica of the jewel.  If she hadn't done this, she could have remained as a cute girl (^_^).  Tenchi broke the seal, allowing her to get energy from outside to recover. "I was trying to make the replica at the cost of my body. And once it's done, I could have broken the seal and gone to see Tenchi to surprise him..." Tenchi's act of breaking the seal rendered all her effort and hope worthless. That's why she attacked Tenchi out of spite. (She had no intention of harming him.)

37. What is the earring on Ryoko's left ear?
Answer:
It is a replica of the jewel.

More details ...
Ryoko always wears a earring in her left ear, it looks like the jewel, but it is only its replica. "I was determined to play with Tenchi as soon as I had re-created the jewel" (ep.5, Ryoko).  The fact Ryoko made it herself proves that this is a replica. The real jewel cannot be even destroyed, not to mention created. It is an emergency substitute for Ryoko and not as powerful as the real one. The replica is very easy for Ryoko to make once she is outside of the seal.  Within it, however, she had to use her own energy to make one, being sealed away from the outside. She cannot get any more power even if she makes more than one replica. Tenchi cut her left arm off in ep.1 and the replica exploded. She didn't care too much as she can make one any time. After she got one real jewel back from Tenchi in ep.2, the replica became even less valuable.

38. Why did Ryoko use the earring in ep.6?
Answer:
To make a better balance for her battle suit.

More details ...
In ep.6, she took the earing off and put it on her right wrist. Why did she do it when she had a real jewel? If you look at her battle suit in ep.5, you will notice that her power was concentrated on her left side, causing an imbalance. She knew that she had to fight the mighty Kagato so that she wanted to make her power balanced. Of course, the replica jewel is much less powerful than the real thing, but better than nothing.

39. How powerful would Ryoko be with all three jewels?
Answer:
As powerful as Tsunami.

More details ...
Even if she has all three jewels, she cannot use their power fully. Her body could not cope with the sheer power. Ryoko is still growing. When she matures into a perfect body, she and Ryo-oh-ki will be able to use the full power of the jewels. Then she will have sufficient power to match that of Tsunami, who can create ten Ko-oh-yoku. Yosho could beat her in ep.3 (700 years ago) because she was still imperfect.

40. Where would she wear the three jewels?
Answer:
On her both wrists and neck.

More details ...
Ryoko with three jewels appeared only momentally in the scene of her attack on the Jurai Star in ep.2. As you know, two of them were on the inside of her wrists. Then where is the third one? You can find the answer in ep.3. In the memory of Funaho, which Tenchi and Aeka saw, Yosho stabbed Ryoko in the neck with his sword. Yes, the third one was in her neck. In the following scene, the jewel can be seen moving out of her neck to the Tenchi Sword. (Tenchi Sword is the wooden part of the sword.) By that time, the other two had already been absorbed by the Sword. She wears the replica as a earing just because she likes it in that way. Incidentally, the jewel on her right wrist controls her offensive power, while the left one is for defensive power, and one on the neck is for central power.

41. Does Ryoko wear underwear?

Answer:
No.

More details ...
In the last scene of ep.1, her partly revealed breast suggested that she does not wear underwear. Really? Usually she doesn't.  Her cloths are NOT bought on earth, she keeps them in Ryo-oh-ki (space ship mode).

42. What is Ryoko's tail?
Answer:
It is a mere accessory.

More details ...
In ep.4 and ep.7, Ryoko seemed to have a tail, which moved like a cat's. On the other hand, the naked Ryoko in the onsen in ep.4 (and at other times) doesn't seem to have one. Her tail is an accessory attached to her clothes.  Although it moves in tune with her emotions, it is not a real tail.

43. Why does Ryoko drink sake?
Answer:
Just for fun.

More details ...
"Uh... This is a heaven." (ep.5, Ryoko) Ryoko started drinking after ep.5.  Has she got this habit after she came to Earth?  Well, she was a pirate so it's more than likely that she had it before. Also she gets drunk properly when she drinks (^_^). In fact she does not have to eat at all because she gets all her energy through the jewel. The reason she has meals at Tenchi's home is simply because Tenchi has them, too.  Ryoko just wants to do the same thing as he does (Called being cute. ^_^)  In ep.7, Ryoko tried to cook something for him without success. She doesn't have much sense of taste because she has hardly taken meals before. This applies to drinking, too. She enjoys the feeling of getting drunk, rather that the taste of sake. Even if she is drunk, she can remove alcohol from her body instantly becoming sober, just like when Kagato appeared in ep.5.

44. Who made Ryoko?

Answer:
Basically, Washu.

More details ...
"She is my possession and..." (ep.5, Kagato)
"It is me who made the ship on which you are now." (ep.6)
"Bastard! He is hurting my work" (ep.6, Washu)
"Ryo-oh-ki and this Souja, both are my work. As for you, as I used my egg, I'm more your mother than creator." (ep.6, Washu).

So both Kagato and Washu claim they made Ryoko and Ryo-oh-ki. Who made them?
Washu did the development concept and basic parts. Kagato was her assistant at that time, so he feels she is his work, too. Souja, Kagato's ship, was also made by Washu originally but he changed it while Washu was sealed away for 5000 years. Kagato admits in ep.5 that he could not make a system which obtains energy from the jewel as compact as Ryoko. This suggests that it was Washu who designed Ryoko.

45. How can Ryoko be 2017 years old?

Answer:
Because she uses a different calendar.

More details ...
Ryoko shouted at Washu, "No kidding! I've been alone for 2000 years ever since I was born... Born?" (ep.6, Ryoko). But Washu was confined for 5000 years. Is it a mistake in the anime? (^_^;)

No. Washu used time calculated in year of Earth while Ryoko used her own time scale. Ryoko was subconsciously trying to deny her age. After all a mere 2000 is much younger than 5000 years old. If she adjusted her time scale to that of Earth, this gap wouldn't have occurred. In conclusion, Ryoko is 5000 years old in Earth year. All other characters' age is calculated in Galactic Standard Calendar. For example, Washu's age (20000 years old) is in this standard.

46. Why did Ryoko split herself into two?

Answer:
That's one of her abilities.

More details ...
In ep.7, Ryoko tried to sneak into Tenchi's room. Then she split herself into two and acted out a little play. How can she do it?  Just like her ability to pass through walls and her incredible power, it is just one of her features. (^_^;) She can do it somehow. Don't ask why.  But the secondary Ryoko does not have the jewel because that cannot be split.

JURAI AYEKA MASAKI

47. Why could Aeka escape from Jurai?
Answer:
Perhaps thanks to Tsunami.

More details ...
Being a pirate guild originally, Jurai's Imperial Family is relatively free from formality and conventional customs. Yet Aeka is a legitimate daughter of Emperor and must have been protected (or watched) by her guards all the time.  Then, how could she escape from Jurai?

It is because the members of Imperial Family are very strong. They are the most powerful people in Jurai, and ordinary terrorists would be easily beaten by them. Tsunami probably interfered too. Sasami had known her sister's intention and sneaked into Ryu-oh to escape with her. Tsunami helped her partner {Sasami} using her power, against which even Imperial Family can do nothing.

48. Why did Aeka halt the time in Ryu-oh?

Answer:
Out of young girl's sensitivity. Vanity.
{I cannot translate 'otomegokoro'. Is there such a thing in the West? ^_^;}

More details ...
While Aeka was searching for her brother Yosho in Ryu-oh, she froze the time in the ship. Why did she do this when 700 years is not a long time for long-living Jurai people? (In fact, to them, 700 years is the same as two or three to us.)  She wanted to remain as little changed as possible. In fact she did not follow Yosho immediately after he left. She had waited in Jurai for some time. Time passed without a message from him and she became more and more worried.  Eventually she decided to leave Jurai herself.  While she was waiting, she grew up accordingly and worried that she might become too beautiful for Yosho to recognise her. In addition, it was very hard for her to wait for the day to see him again, not knowing when it would be.  So she thought it was easier to sleep and wait.

49. Why is Aeka's key worn on her forehead?
Answer:
That's her taste.

More details ...
Usually the shape of a key depends on the shape of the branch. Aeka saw the branch and decided to make it into the tiara-like shape. ("Jurai tiara action!") Other examples are; Aeka's mother Misaki's key is like a comb to put on her pony-tail, Sasami's like a trigger, and Tenchi's is a sword.

Incidentally, keys are not essential to activate the power of Trees. As long as the partner can mentally synchronise with the Tree, its power can be used.  But it is easier for the partner to concentrate for synchronisation if he/she physically does something, such as holding the key in his/her hand.
50. What happened to Ryu-oh after it crashed into Seto-naikai?
Answer:
Ryo-oh-ki translocated it.

More details ...
Ryo-oh-ki crushed Ryu-oh against Seto-naikai in ep.2. What happeded to Ryu-oh after that? Ryo-oh-ki has translocated it into the lake near the Masaki Shrine.  If you think that Ryu-oh, a Jurai Imperial ship, should not have been sunk by such a simple attack, here is the answer for it. "The mass of Ryo-oh-ki is abnormally increasing!" (ep.2, Kamidake). As this line suggests, Ryo-oh-ki increased its mass to crush Ryu-oh completely. Ryu-oh, however, could have survived this attack, too, if Tenchi's master key had not restricted Ryu-oh's power. Anyway, after the crash, Ryo-oh-ki teleported to the lake together with Ryu-oh to keep the excess energy of 'abnormal mass' from causing more damage. Well, if Ryu-oh had not absorbed the shock, both ship would have been completely destroyed to end the Tenchi series earlier than planned (^_^).

51. Who arranged the engagement between Aeka and Yosho?

Answer:
Their respective mothers.

More details ...
"I shall be your bride, shan't I?" (ep.3, Aeka). She already knew the arrangement when she was such a small girl. But who arranged this?  The mothers of Aeka and Yosho are very close and arranged the marriage between their children. Nobody particularly opposed it. For example, it was politically useful to the Emperor. But there were some who opposed Yosho's foreign blood. As for the two children, Aeka had no complaint and Yosho did not take it too seriously. He thought Aeka would change her mind once she grew up.

52. Why was the colour of Aeka's face different in her combat suit?

Answer:
Because she had a defensive screen.

More details ...
Aeka and others went into the Souja to avenge Tenchi. The suit she wore then is a combat suit which the members of Imperial Family wear for serious combat. Her face was in different colour because she was covered with maximum defensive field. If it had not been for Kagato, it would have remained the usual colour.

JURAI SASAMI MASAKI

53. What is the emblem on Sasami's forehead?
Answer:
The same one as Tsunami's.

More details ...
What is the meaning of Sasami's emblem, which Aeka doesn't have?  Funaho (Yosho's mother.) and Misaki (Aeka & Sasami's mother.) have similar ones. But theirs are makeup; Funaho the first Queen has one while Misaki the second has two.  But Sasami's is real, not makeup. In ep.6, when she said a spell, her emblem was glittering. It is the same emblem as Tsunami's although, being a child, Sasami's has a different shape.

Episode 9 "Sasami and Tsunami" will further confuse this issue.

54. Why doesn't Sasami have any guardians?

Answer:
Because she had a nanny.

More details ...
Aeka has two guardians whereas Sasami has none. Has she left hers back on Jurai? No. She had a nanny instead. Having a nanny means being protected and, therefore, no need for guardians. Guardians are usually attached to ships when someone leaves Jurai. So while Sasami stayed in Jurai, she didn't have one.

55. Why did Sasami order Tenchi to steal Aeka's key?
Answer:
She was just being mischievious.

More details ...
"Do you understand?" "Eh, the thing of her forehead, isn't it?" (ep.2, Sasami & Tenchi). Sasami, after asking Tenchi to play with her, ordered him to steal the key from Aeka's bedroom. Why? It was just a bit of childish mischief.  She may have wanted to say, "I'll let you go if you go and see Aeka...".

56. Has Sasami got ESP?
Answer:
No. (Definitely!!)

More details ...
In ep.4, Sasami foresaw the attack of Kagato. "No, don't take him away, please!!" (ep.7, Sasami) The appearance of Tokimi was also hinted in her shocking dream where she was covered with blood. Is she prescient?  No. Well, there are lots of things behind this that cannot be revealed. One thing can be said is that the person (the book does not say if this means Sasami or not. This could be Tsunami) has prescience. Sasami was certainly under strong influence of some power but she does not have ESP herself. More will be revealed in the new series of OVA.

57. How did Sasami know Tenchi's crisis in ep.6?

Answer:
Tsunami told her.

More details ...
Although it was not clearly shown on the screen, Sasami remained on Earth and waited for Tenchi to come back when he and the others went to attack Kagato in Ryo-oh-ki (in spaceship mode) in ep.5. She was taking care of Tenchi's injured grandfather and they didn't want her exposed to any danger. But when Tenchi was almost fatally injured by Kagato's attack, Sasami back on the earth somehow realised his crisis. "No, Tenchi, please don't die ..." (ep.6, Sasami). How did she know? Sasami was told by Tsunami, who, as the origin of Trees, knows status of all the keys. Tenchi's master key informed Tsunami, who passed it on to Sasami. (Yes, also in ep.6, when Tenchi asked Tsunami where Aeka was, she replied, "There is the signal of Ryu-oh's key in a ship about 70 light-second away from here ..." She didn't mention Aeka directly.)

"Under the symbol of Kings and my real name, open the road to the origin of Space Trees. Heaven to Sea, Sea to Earth, Earth to Heaven, show me the marked road with light!" (ep.6, Sasami) With this spell, she was absorbed in Funaho.  To create a gate by linking Trees of Imperial Family is one of Tsunami's abilities.
58. How did Sasami get on board the Souja?
Answer:
Thanks to Tsunami.

More details ...
In the last scene of ep.6, Sasami somehow appeared in the cathedral on the Souja. How did she manage that?

When Tenchi relaunched the offensive against Kagato, Tsunami was quite near to Souja. Tsunami translocated Sasami from there to the Souja. As it was after Tenchi had beaten Kagato, the defensive field of Souja had already broken to make the job much easier. On the other hand, when Tsunami sent Tenchi and the two guardians in, it was much harder as the field was still intact. This is why Tenchi got one of his feet trapped in the subspace. In any case, Tsunami was busy doing a lot of things for them although she didn't show up on the screen so much (;_;).
59. Who is Tokimi, who appeared in Sasami's nightmare?
Answer:
The Supreme of the Three Lives.

More details ...
"Don't take him away, To..Ki..Mi..." (ep.7, Sasami). Who is this Tokimi person in Sasami's nightmare?

It cannot be revealed because it is very important for the future story. All we can say is she (he?) is the Supreme of the Three Lives and a bit different one from that appeared in other media.  [Also note that the silhouettes behind Tokimi resemble Washuu and Tsunami...].

RYU-OHKI

60. Why does Ryo-oh-ki love carrots so much?
Answer:
Because they are so delicious.

More details ...
Ryo-oh-ki ate a carrot in ep.3 for the first time and fell in love with it immediately. Why? Like Ryoko, Ryo-oh-ki gets necessary energy through the jewel. But unlike Ryoko, Ryo-oh-ki has sense of taste. So the answer to the question is; simply she thought it was wonderful. In ep.7, whenever the word 'carrot' was said to her, Ryo-oh-ki reacted in such a frantic way that some fan complained "Is she fed properly?" (^_^).  The fact is she loves to behave in such a way. If she is allowed, she can eat endlessly (^_^) because they will be digested 'completely'. In short, Ryo-oh-ki is very happy as long as she can eat carrots.

61. What is the jewel-like thing on Ryo-oh-ki's forehead?

Answer:
Something that synchronise with the jewel.

More details ...
Ryo-oh-ki has a jewel-like thing on her forehead. Is this the same thing as Ryoko's jewel? Strictly speaking, no. More correctly, it is something that synchronise with the jewel. Their relation is like a host computer and a terminal. Ryo-oh-ki is linked to Ryoko through them. It is also where Ryo-oh-ki stores the energy received from the jewel. This is why Ryoko had to get a jewel back form Tenchi in ep.2 to summon Ryo-oh-ki. Ryo-oh-ki can also emit a beam from it when she fights in her animal mode.

62. History of Ryo-oh-ki.

Answer:
Two Ryo-oh-ki in ep.3 and ep.7 are not the same one.

More details ...
The first generation Ryo-oh-ki was badly damaged in ep.2. Later she died and a new baby hatched from an egg. An entire spaceship became a small animal-mode Ryo-oh-ki.  In ep.5, this baby transforms itself to a spaceship, a mature form of the second generation Ryo-oh-ki. Then what are those many Ryo-oh-ki appeared in ep.7? They are the crystals in the bridge of the spaceship-mode Ryo-oh-ki.  They transformed themselves using the information of animal-mode from the spaceship. (There were crystals in the first-generation Ryo-oh-ki, too. But they could not transform.) So the bunch of Ryo-oh-ki, with a carrot each, had to go back to the lake, where the spaceship is kept. Also this explains why there was only one Ryo-oh-ki before ep.7, and there was no animal-mode Ryo-oh-ki in ep.2.

(See Q 85 for the reason why the second generation acquired animal-mode information.)
63. What is the quartz sphere in the middle of the spaceship-mode Ryo-oh-ki?
Answer:
It is a living unit.

More details ...
The big quartz sphere in the middle of Ryo-oh-ki is a unit for the crew to live in. In the early concept, this sphere was supposed to be left when Ryo-oh-ki was destroyed (rather than an egg). But now it is settled as a living unit. It contains the bridge, Ryoko's belongings and so on.

64. What are the balls on the bridge of Ryo-oh-ki?
Answer:
They are control sticks for manual operation.

More details ...
In ep.6 Aeka manipulated two balls in the bridge of Ryo-oh-ki. They are the control unit of Ryo-oh-ki for anybody other than Ryoko. It was originally made as an auxiliary control unit when Ryoko and Ryo-oh-ki could not synchronise very well. Ryoko, therefore, used them only in early days of the first generation Ryo-oh-ki.

65. What is the special crystal Ryo-oh-ki with a different color?
Answer:
It is kind of a leader.

More details ...
In ep.6, Mihoshi found a crystal different from the others, with three (the book says two, but actually there are three in the anime) small spheres in the middle. What is it?  Crystal Ryo-oh-ki are computer units and the special one is a leader, kind of a host computer. The leader mainly thinks (or computes) and, when it is overloaded, the others join to do parallel processing.

66. What happened to Ryo-oh-ki in the battle with Kagato?

Answer:
Hardly anything.

More details ...
After Ryo-oh-ki fought against Ryu-oh in ep.2, she re-created herself. But how about after the battle with Kagato? Did she do the same thing again?  No. Ryo-oh-ki was hardly hurt. It was the Ryu-oh unit beneath her that was mostly damaged by the attack. Of course, Ryo-oh-ki did get some damage but that was light enough to be healed without a problem. In fact, the first generation Ryo-oh-ki died partly because her life span was about to end. She had a good fight with Yosho and felt the limit of her power. So she decided re-create herself. Ryo-oh-ki can evolve like Ryoko and, therefore, the second generation has more power than the first generation. Incidentally, Ryo-oh-ki took Ryu-oh in to reinforce her offensive capability and the Tree on Ryu-oh accepted this idea to allow the combination.

67. Is the spaceship-mode Ryo-oh-ki staying in the water?

Answer:
Yes, she is.

More details ...
Where is the main body of Ryo-oh-ki, the spaceship, now? "Come on! Get back to the lake!" (ep.7, Washu) As this suggests, the spaceship is under the water of the lake. On the other hand, Ryu-oh and the other ships are in a subspace, mimicking a surface of water. You may wonder if such a large object like Ryo-oh-ki under the water would change the water level and make it overflow. But it's not a problem as Ryo-oh-ki stays in the water just like Ryoko when she passes through the wall.  Ryo-oh-ki's molecules sneaks in between the water molecules so that only density, but not volume, will increase. This makes Ryo-oh-ki invisible just like Ryoko in the wall. Yes, Washu's technology is incredible (^_^;).

68. How many Ryo-oh-ki are there in total?

Answer:
101. (Of course ^_^)

More details ...
A huge number of Ryo-oh-ki appeared in ep.7. But exactly how many? 101.

Guess why. ^_^ Yes, it is from Di**ey (^_^).

MIHOSHI KURAMITSU
69. What is Mihoshi's 'cube'?
Answer:
It's a subspace key.

More details ...
It is a key to expand subspaces. In another word, it is a cube-shaped 4-dimensional pocket. All the members of GP have one, but this particular one of Mihoshi is an illegal cube, with many more functions. It is probably made by Galaxy Academy. Why is she allowed to have it? Perhaps because she is a 1st degree detective, or perhaps her grandfather is turning a blind eye to it.

70. Is Yukinojou in every GP ship?

Answer:
No. Only Mihoshi's ship has Yukinojou.

More details ...
Although all the GP ships are equipped with a similar units, it is only Yukinojou that talks like that. As these units are self-evolving, the way their character and functions develop depends on their owner. Being used by Mihoshi, Yukinojou has become rather silly (^_^). But at the same time, he is very capable and can understand her ambiguous speech.

71. Does Mihoshi have a family?

Answer:
Yes. Her family has six members.

More details ...
She has grandparents (her grandfather is the head of GP), parents and a younger brother. Her brother is an odd person with a sister complex (I know this is wrong translation for 'shisu-con'. Oedipus complex is the complex for parents, isn't it? Do you know the term that is for a sister?) and her grandfather spoils her a lot. Her mother is a bit vacuous like Mihoshi. Many of her relatives work in GP (not necessarily as detectives though).

72. Why does Mihoshi never undo her pony-tail?

Answer:
Because if she does, she will lose her memory.

More details ...
She ties her hair in pony-tail even in the bath. This is because she will not remember anything while she is without it. Why? It cannot be revealed now.

73. Why could Mihoshi enter Washu's lab?

Answer:
Because she is a genius of chance. (ie, Unbelievably Lucky.)

More details...
She appeared in the lab when Washu was trying to collect Tenchi's sperm. Washu said, "Nobody shouldn't be able to enter so easily ..." (ep.7). Mihoshi is a genius of chance and she somehow found herself there when she had lost her way.  Only Mihoshi can beat Washu.

74. About the secret of Mihoshi's ship

Answer:
It has different shapes in ep.4 and ep.7.

More details ...
Her ship functions as a mobile police station. Unlike other GP ships, it does not need a recharge of energy or maintenance. That is, it has a self-evolving function. If you look closely, her ship has different shapes in the two episodes. The ship had evolved itself during the intervening period. Using this function, the ship keeps upgrading itself according to the latest information sent from the Headquarter, gathering resources from nearby planets or subspaces, as necessary. In this context, it is a living ship, similar to Ryo-oh-ki. Again this ship is an invention of Galaxy Academy. Why has only Mihoshi got it? Because of her grandfather (^_^).

75. How big is Mihoshi's ship?

Answer:
Approximately 150m long.

More details ...
About the same size as Aeka's ship, Ryu-oh. However, most of the outer part of Ryu-oh is decoration and the unit itself is about a third of Mihoshi's ship in size. Incidentally, the main part of Ryo-oh-ki is about 50m long.

76. Where is Mihoshi's ship anchored?

Answer:
At no fixed abode. (^_^)

More details ...
As mentioned before, GP ships act as mobile police stations and don't stay in any particular place. It is only by chance that Mihoshi's ship was seen around Saturn in ep.7. The ship is invisible from the Earth, though, because it is equipped with a 'storming machine' which makes the ship transparent. Ryu-oh has one, too, as you can hear one of the guardians say "Storming level 4!" in ep.2.

77. Is Mihoshi's shuttle destroyed in the crash with Tenchi's house?

Answer:
No, it saved itself by braking. The shuttle did not explode thanks to its emergency brake, which, however destroyed Tenchi's home with the shock wave.  The shuttle is kept in a subspace by Washu.

WASHU HAKUBI

78. Is Washu the girl kidnapped by Kagato?
Answer:
Yes, she is.

More details ...
Washu was living in the graduate school of Galaxy Academy and kind of a leader among the graduate students. When Mihoshi broke the seal of Washu in ep.6, she asked, "Are.., are you perhaps the girl Kagato kidnapped?". Then Washu showed for a moment an embarrassed expression on her face. When she was kidnapped, the graduate students told the police that a *girl* student was kidnapped as a joke. (Even though Washu was 10,000 years old.) So Washu's expression meant "Those bloody kids are...". The graduate students are very close to each other and so outrageous that nobody would lend a place for the venue of their reunion.

79. Why does Washu call herself a genius scientist?

Answer:
Because it's true (^_^).

More details ...
"I am Washu, a genius, the best scientist in the Universe" (ep.6) "That's because I am a genius scientist, the best in the Universe" (ep.7) Why does she declare so confidently? Because she is (^_^). What is her IQ? She is too talented to be measured by IQ.

80. How is Washu linked to Ryoko?

Answer:
By an astral link.

More details ...
"Just as you are linked to Ryo-oh-ki, you are linked to me." (Ep.6 Washu)  Washu and Ryoko are linked at spirit level by an astral link, which Kagato's seal could not block. The link between Ryoko and Ryo-oh-ki is also an astral link but it is much weaker. So there is no privacy for Ryoko.

81. About the secret of Washu's lab

Answer:
It is set in a subspace.

More details ...
In ep.7, Washu's lab suddenly appeared beneath the staircase. How can such a big lab fit into a small space? Well, it is built in a subspace and consists of five planets (!!); the main one at the center surrounded by the other four, which are linked by orbital elevators. Her lab was built long before she came to Tenchi's house. She just made a door to it. In Tenchimuyo, the concept of subspaces is clearly established and very convenient (^_^).

82. What are those Ryoko and Ryo-oh-ki dolls popped out of Washu's computer?

Answer:
They are the internal circuits of the computer.

More details ...
Inside the computer, there are many of these mini Ryo-oh-ki (Ryoko dolls are bugs (^_^)), which themselves consist of millions of molecular level Ryo-oh-ki. When this micro Ryo-oh-ki raises her hand, this represents '0' in the binary system {^_^;}. It then communicates with (or talks to ^_^;) the next one to form a circuit.

83. How did Washu break the seal of Tenchi's room?

Answer:
She knocked the door.

More details ...
In ep.7, Aeka sealed Tenchi's room against Ryoko, but Sasami and Washu could go in without any trouble.  Why? This seal can be broken simply by knocking the door. Do you remember Aeka said to Ryoko "What a rude girl to go into the room without a knock!" She herself was later caught by it when she rushed into the room without knocking.  "Two silly girls who forgot to knock!" (ep.7 Washu). As for Ryo-oh-ki, she scratched the door as usual, which was recognised as a knock by the trap (^_^).

Why was Washu in Tenchi's room? She just wanted to have a chat with him. You know, she looks like a girl of 12 and behaves accordingly in front of him.

84. What is the relationship between Washu and Kagato?

Answer:
Master and student.

More details ...
Kagato was Washu's assistant. But later she became an obstacle to his purposes, so he confined her.

SUB-CHARACTERS
85. What has happeded to the cat that appeared in ep.1?
Answer:
It was used as a prototype of Ryo-oh-ki.

More details ...
A cat called Chibi appeared in ep.1 but was never seen again. It was used by Ryo-oh-ki. More precisely it was assimilated into Ryo-oh-ki. Therefore, Ryo-oh-ki is Chibi and Chibi is Ryo-oh-ki at the same time.  Tenchi found Chibi on the first day of his summer holiday (ie, before ep.1 starts), lying near the steps and nearly dead. He took care of it, which recovered by the time ep.1 started. But it was Ryoko in her astral body who really saved Chibi. She felt so sorry for Tenchi that she used her energy to keep it alive. When Ryoko eventually revived completely, she had to withdraw her energy from Chibi and allow it to die. She did her best by assimilating it into the second generation Ryo-oh-ki.  Tenchi, having seen Ryoko holding Chibi's bell in her hand (ep.1), may think Chibi was Ryoko herself.

86. What are the marks on the guardians?

Answer:
They are Jurai characters.

More details ...
They are Jurai's special characters called "namae-moji" {name-characters}. A single character represents the name, such as Azaka, except for the members of Imperial Family who have two characters (A-eka, Sasa-mi).

87. Can the guardians teleport?

Answer:
Yes, they can.

More details ...
More precisely, it is subspace translocation rather than teleportation. They can do it any time with some limit on the distance (the width of a galaxy is not a problem). But they do need the support from the Tree.

88. What has happened to the White Rock Fleet?

Answer:
All the crew were evacuated or rescued safely.

More details ...
The White Rock Fleet, which tried to stop Kagato in ep.4, was completely devastated but all the crew escaped in safety. Kagato was just passing by and did not attack them. If he had done, all the crew would have been killed. Of course, Kagato did not care for their well-being, either.

89. What has happened to those animals in Ryu-oh?
Answer:
They are all well and happy.

More details ...
All the animals lived in Ryu-oh were unhurt by the crash. The trick is everything in Ryu-oh except the bridge was in a subspace, rather that actually on board. Aeka had kept her personal belongings there, too. This subspace was detached from Ryu-oh upon the crash to protect its contents. Now that Ryu-oh has been recreated in ep.7, the link is re-established so that the subspace is readily accessible again.

90. What is the relationship between Tenchi and the old lady of onsen?
Answer:
She is his relative. (Great Aunt?)

More details ...
The old lady of the onsen is Tenchi's relative; his father's father's younger sister. Tenchi and his father visit her place every year (Urayamashii ^_^;).  But she is not running a ryokan. Her house is just a big place and open to locals only.

91. What is the ultimate purpose of Kagato?
Answer:
The completion of Unified Field Theory.

More details ...
He is a scientist and wants to solve problems at any cost. He is purely driven by curiosity. For example, suppose there is a mysterious ancient ruin that interests him. He wants to study it by himself rather than leave it to someone else (say, official archeologist) and will do so by removing (or destroying) anything in his way. He loves the process of solving problems and, as soon as the solution is found, he will lose interest in the subject.  He said to Ryoko, "I'm sorry you cannot see me conquering the universe" (ep.6), but the conquest of universe is merely a means to create the best environment for his research. His ultimate purpose is to create a Unified Field Theory including subspaces.

92. Why is Kagato, but not Ryoko, wanted permanently?

Answer:
Because his offense is more serious (^_^)

More details ...
Kagato is in complicity with Ryoko in crime. So they should be treated in the same way, shouldn't they? Well, Ryoko did destroy a lot of things but did not hurt people so much. On the other hand, Kagato pays no attention to people as long as they don't offend his sense of beauty.  But "no attention" means he does not mind killing them accidentally in his process to achieve his aim. So his offense is more serious. Tenchi never commented on Kagato's sense of beauty (or curiousity-driven ambitions) and in return Kagato did not reproach him in his last words.

93. What was Kagato doing while Ryoko was sealed?
Answer:
He was building the Souja.

More details ...
First of all, Kagato lost Ryoko's trace completely thanks to Yosho's perfect seal. This was not a big loss for him, especially when it was only for 700 years. He was busy building the Souja during that time.  Then, why did he know Aeka and Sasami were on the Earth when he finally came to regain Ryoko? He was careful enough to investigate the situation beforehand and even had visited Ryoko's shrine to obtain more information.

94. How did Kagato control Ryoko?

Answer:
By mind-control.

More details ...
When Kagato confined Washu, Ryoko was only a child. He had mind-control over her at this time. So when she was controlled by Kagato in ep.5, you can see her jewel glittering. Even this mind-control was not enough to suppress Ryoko's emotions upon Tenchi's presumed death.

95. Is Kagato really dead?
Answer:
I leave it to your imagination (^_^;)

More details ...
Well, the Kagato who attacked Tenchi is certainly dead. But there is no guarantee that the Kagato we saw in ep.4-6 was the real one (^_^).  (Yet another cryptic answer ^_^;;)

96. How did Tenchi and the others escape from the exploding Souja?
Answer:
Chose the one you like from the followings.

More details ...
1. Tsunami's power.
2. Guardian's subspace translocation.
3. Ryoko's teleportation.
4. Ryo-oh-ki became a spaceship.
5. Washu activated Souja's emergency evacuation system.

97. What is the mirror-world in the Souja?

Answer:
It was originally Washu's private space.

More details ...
As its name suggests (Souja = Twin serpents), Souja is a spaceship with two spaces in it. One in which Washu was confined was a mirror world where everything becomes its mirror image. Washu made it so that she could do the research without anybody interfering. So even Kagato could not enter easily.  You see, Washu is a genius (^_^)

98. About the secret of Tsunami

Answer:
She is the origin of Trees of Imperial Family (for the time being....)

More details ...
Tsunami was referred as in many names in the series.

Strongest Ship.  Obvious. She is the only one in the universe who can create ten Koh-oh-yoku.
Ship of Beginning.  She is not only the origin of the Trees but also the power that enabled Jurai to have a biggest territory in the universe.
Secret jewel of universe.  With her enormous power, she is eligible to be called like this. Also as Jurai keeps quiet about the secrets of the Trees, people outside regard the Trees as mystery of the universe. In fact, even Jurai does not know the real secret of the Trees.
Human version of Ryo-oh-ki.  Tenchi said this from animal-version of Ryo-oh-ki. Simple.
99. Why did Tsunami have the seed of Ryu-oh?
Answer:
She picked it up from its branch.

More details ...
Tenchi handed a seed of Ryu-oh to Aeka at the beginning of ep.7, saying it was from Tsunami. In ep.6, in the scene where the guardians halted the time around Tenchi, he was seen surrounded by branches of Ryu-oh. As Ryu-oh had died by then, a new seed for re-creation was on the branch (See Q 12). Tsunami picked it up and gave it to Tenchi.

100. How did the Emperor meet Funaho?

Answer:
They met on the Earth.

More details ...
Azusa, the current Emperor, was travelling for martial training across the universe. One day, a certain incident (Yet again ...) made him come to the Earth. He saw Funaho (not the spaceship, but Yosho's mother) and instantly fell in love with her. So he took her home to get married. [ie. Funaho is an Earth native, and looking very well for her 7+ centuries..].

101. Why is this book called "Tenchi Muyou 101 Secrets"?

Answer:
You should know if you have read it.

More details ...
Unfortunately, there are many more secrets omitted from this book, such as "Why does Washu look like a child?", "Washu's past", "Tokimi's purpose", "Relation between Sasami and Tsunami", "Tenchi's real power" ... Well, they should become clear in the second series of OVAs. If not, there might be another Secret book (^_^;;;).
